In 1972, Arthur’s son, Harald Kvalheim, came home to Måløy to help his father with the business. The plan was to stay one year – he stayed for good. Harald was an energetic entrepreneur, and in the 1970s he started salmon farming. Today he is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian aquaculture industry, and the fish-farming companies grew out as spin-offs of the fuel business.
The company supplied fuel, lubricants and water under Shell up until 1994, when the business moved into new premises. From 1995 Norsk Hydro (Hydro Olje) took over as fuel supplier. Hydro and Texaco had just merged into Hydro Texaco, which in 2006 became YX when Reitangruppen took over the chain. In 2017 we switched to Equinor as our main fuel supplier.
From 1995 we added Castrol to our range, and the brand has since been a central part of our lubricant offering, particularly towards the maritime market.
Our own distribution was for many years an important part of operations. We started with two tanker trucks in 2001, added a third in 2011 with the Fosnavåg branch, and the fourth arrived in 2022 with the establishment in Stryn. The tanker trucks were included in the sale of MH24 in 2026.
Bunkering from the sea has been part of our operations. “Vestservice” is our tank boat in Måløy, delivering fuel to vessels along the coast. “Bunkerservice” was stationed in Ålesund and operated bunker barges; it was sold to Haltbakk Bunkers in 2020.
In 2000 the business merged with Skibenes & Søn AS (Esso), forming today’s ownership structure. The original Måløy Havneservice changed its name to Kulahammeren AS at the same time – later Kvalheim & Com AS, which today is the company’s largest owner. The name Måløy Havneservice was carried on by a new company established that same year, and it is this company that took the name MHService AS in 2017.
Måløy Havneservice built filling stations before 2015 as well, but development really gathered pace when, in 2015, we merged three companies – Måløy Havneservice, Mørebunkers and Fosnavåg Is og Oljeservice – and acquired two Shell stations. This is how the MH24 chain was founded.
MH24 grew to 24 stations, and as of 1 August 2026 the entire chain – including tanker trucks and drivers – was sold to Oljeleverandøren AS. Today MHService focuses on its core business: marine fuel, lubricants, chemicals and consumables for the coastal fleet and shore-based facilities.
